  25. ~The reason that text files appear to download faster is because the modems
  26. ~are applying data compression, so that the character-per-second (cps)
  27. ~rate is very high.  Graphic files (.GIF and .JPG) are already highly
  28. ~compressed, so that the modems are unable to compress them further.
  29. ~If you calculate how many "bytes" of information are actually in a .GIF
  30. ~file (multiply the width in pixels by the height in pixels by the color
  31. ~depth, where 256 colors=1 byte, 65K colors=2bytes, "truecolor"=3 bytes),
  32. ~then divide by the transfer time in seconds, you'll find that it is as
  33. ~efficient as text...

  37. one way to get faster download rates.

  39.     Get the other end to 'Upload Faster'. If they can't or won't increase
  40. uploading rates you're out of luck.
